Learning another language is a very exciting thing to do! It’s about so much more than simply knowing how to speak the local tongue of other countries. It allows you to connect with people from all over the world, whether they are native speakers or like you, students who have studied foreign languages at school. To speak and understand another language shows an open mind towards other cultures, their way of Life and of course not to forget, living in the 21st century it is absolutely essential when you apply for a job pretty much anywhere in the world.

Such a shame that trying to remember and study endless lists of new vocabulary can be a tedious and time consuming task. More often than not, unless you continuously practice those new words in a day to day environment chances are that you will end up forgetting a lot of them again by the time you finally get to go abroad. That being said though, the more words you know, the easier your communication will be, even if you’re still a bit unsteady in other areas of the language like grammar. So the bad news is that studying your vocabulary list isn’t gonna go away, not even with an app. But the good news is that there is finally a fun and entertaining way to keep practicing them. And believe me when I say “It’s very addictive”. The solution you are looking for is called Wordscapes.

What is it for?

Wordscapes is a fun and free way to practice and improve your English vocabulary on the go. Be it whilst waiting at the doctors, riding public transport or sunbathing in the park, the wordscapes app can be accessed from your phone at any time, anywhere in the world and even if you just play a few minutes here and there, you will notice an improvement in your vocabulary very quickly.

How does it work?

There is no need to register an account or anything. Simply download the app from your app store for free and start playing. Here’s a quick demo: https://youtu.be/g6oj1Ythic8

The game starts off with a few simple words and gradually builds upon your experience as you move through higher levels. With each level completed you earn a number of virtual currency which goes into your in-game shopping trolley. These hard earned coins can be spent by using hints and tips to guess more words you are not yet familiar with. Initially only 1 type of hint is available to you as seen in the video demo but as you move through higher levels the game will make different types of assistance available to you.

For example you can choose to pay for a “bulls eye” with the aforementioned virtual coins. The bullseye will let you select a specific field inside the grid where you want the letter placed. A “rocket” on the other hand will give you an entire word. Be aware, the better the hint, the more coins it will deduct from your trolley. Not that it matters though seen as we are not talking about real money here.

How much does it cost?

Wordscapes is free to download and use.

Is the app available on both Android and iOS?

A simple YES.
