What is it for?
MeetUp is a free app that lets you easily find groups of like minded people near you who organise gatherings and activities of all sorts. Whether you are looking to try something new or simply do more of what you love, MeetUp has something for everyone.
How does it work?
When you first register your free MeetUp account after downloading the app you will need to set up a basic profile. It really is basic as all you need is a photo, name and the city you’re in. You don’t have to use your real name but it is advisable to use a real photo as this will show that you are a genuine person looking to join genuine groups. The location is purely so that the groups and events suggested to you are relevant and you don’t get distracted by something happening 300 miles away from you.
Once that’s done you can choose multiple topics you are interested in, similar to when you select music genres on Spotify. There is currently at total of 24 different categories.
Based on your selected interests (you can change this at any time), you will then be able to search for suitable groups and events. All you have to do is hit the “Explore” button at the bottom of the page. Once there you can look at suggestions, type a keyword into the search box to look for something specific or scroll down further and browse by category.
Let’s assume you’re a keen adventurer looking for day trips on the weekend when you come to London or Dublin for your internship programme. If you go to “Explore”, select the category “Outdoors & Adventure” from the list of topics shown below the search field. Then proceed to selecting the date and time from the drop down menus offered. Say you’re choosing “next week - 6 - 12 May” and “Any time”. Immediately you have a long list of events and groups you could be interested in. The search we just initiated comes up with seriously exciting stuff like “Day Trip to Canterbury”, “Leith Hill, Sea of Bluebells and Waterfall day trip”, “London Bridge Tour - Mysterious Alleys, Hidden Pathways” and many more. You get the idea.
Once you click on one it will show you all the details you need to know. The exact name of the group and event, who the event organiser is, date and time of the trip, meeting points, potential costs, confirmed attendees etc. To get a feel for the group of people who have already confirmed their participation you can click on a list of attendees and see who’s going and who’s not. If you’re still unsure, there is always a comments section where you can start chatting to the event organisers in advance if you still have questions and need more reassurance.
How much does it cost?
MeetUp is free to download and use. Some of the events you choose may come with associated costs like entry tickets, admin fees or travel costs. Most of it is pretty cheap if not free but please familiarise yourself before booking anything at all.
Is the app available on both Android and iOS? Yes. What’s more, if you don’t have a smartphone or don’t want to use your data allowance abroad you can just use their online services on a good old fashioned laptop/PC. https://www.meetup.com/
Our star rating: 5 out of 5 stars
MeetUp has made it easier than ever to go abroad and still have tons of things to do that actually suit your personal interests and needs. Especially when you travel for cultural and educational purposes it can be very beneficial to mingle with a selected group of people from various cultural backgrounds with mixed levels of English. There is very little time and effort involved and the app is extremely user friendly. Highly recommended for anyone looking to maximise their experiences abroad in a safe manner.
