Meet Odin Pockelé, a health and social care student from Belgium. Recently, he paid ADC College a visit while doing the Internship Programme, an Erasmus+ funded initiative that enables students from Europe to do work experience in London or Dublin. Odin did his placement at Kent House Care Home in north west London and was immensely appreciated for his hard work and happy-go-lucky attitude - although he shrugs off the positive feedback, saying he only tried to be himself.
Tell me a little bit about yourself and your background.
I have lived my entire life in Belgium, although I am actually half German. It means I am fluent in three languages: German, Dutch and English. I am 19 years old, I have two tattoos and love dogs.
What sparked my interest in social care?
I love working with people, youth in particular. This is also the category of people I would like to work with later in life. I discovered this interest when I became a leader in the pathfinders. This means I am used to working with a young people.
What was the best moment?
Trying the curry! I liked it, but I wasn't prepared for the spiciness.
What did you learn from the trip?
Taking the tube.
What was it like working at Kent House Care Home?
All the people living and working there were very friendly. I also noticed a difference between doing an internship in Britain versus Belgium, where you are allowed to do more complex tasks.
What were your tasks there?
I was tasked with entertaining the people who lived there. I also did a lot of little jobs, like decorating and tidying up so that the rest of the staff had more time for the elderly.
We heard that your supervisor was very happy with you and that you were very enthusiastic and dealt with all the residents in a positive and caring way. How do you think you achieved that?
I am not sure, I tried to act normal. I think I was friendly to the staff and the elderly.
How has this experience inspired you?
After I finish college, I would like to study or work abroad again.
