Jana Louisa Spies is an 18-year-old business and administration student who was offered the chance to go to London with the Internship Programme and do work experience at London charity called The National Algerian Centre. She didn't have to think twice before enrolling and soon embarked on a journey she will always remember. During her time in London, she wrote this letter to us about her experiences and we have had the pleasure of publishing it here.

Jana Louisa in London.

My name is Jana and I am from a small village called Elsoff in Germany. Back home I am studying to become an industrial clerk and in July next year I will have finished my education.

I learnt about the Internship Programme at my vocational school and my first thought was: “Jana, do it. That is a onetime chance!” So I signed up. After that I thought: "Three weeks seems like a long time..." But now it is my second week in London and time has flown by!

I am so happy to be here and have fun with the other students

It was definitely the right decision to go on this journey, I am learning so much about big city life, living abroad and what it is like to work in a different organisation that I am used to. I am also learning about different cultures - my host family is of Algerian descent and I also work at the National Algerian Centre. My work placement is very difficult compared to my work in Germany but it is fun to try something entirely new. At the moment, I am creating and issuing a brochure.

This experience shows me that I can spend time away from home and not feel sad or homesick. I am so happy to be here and have fun with the other students. I think maybe it would be better for my English if I was here on my own, but since it is my first time travelling I think it is better that I have the support of my friends!

In fact, I think this is a great experience - everyone who has this chance should take it!
