Lorina Beinker, Ilka Juber and Helen Sophie Bringezu travelled from Germany to London with the Internship Programme, an Erasmus+ funded venture that gives students the opportunity to do work experience abroad. Lorina and Ilka interned at WW Hair & Beauty and Helen Sophie at Shades Beauty & Tanning. We asked the three students what it is like to work at a beauty salon in one of the world's most famous cities.

Lorina and Ilka's story

WW Hair & Beauty is a Brazilian hair and beauty salon in Finchley. There is one beautician and two hairdressers at the shop. The hairdresser section has been around for a longer time than the beauty section, so it is more well known among our clients. The whole team is very friendly, polite and helpful. The manager of the shop speaks fluent English, whereas the rest of the staff mainly speak Portuguese. During our placement, we organised the shelves and cleaned and tidied up the rooms. The beautician showed us some of the treatments and let us use her as a model for training purposes. The internship is great, we have learned a lot of different practices and experienced new things.

I am very happy with my work placement because I have learnt a lot and it has given me the chance to experience a lot of treatments that I haven’t come across at school.

Helen's story

Shades Beauty & Tanning is a beauty salon in Belsize Park, north London. Downstairs you find the beauty section and upstairs the hairdresser Hollistic Hair. The owner of the beauty salon is Polish and there are a lot of clients frequenting the salon. They offer a lot of different treatments, like waxing, facials, pedicure and massage. In the morning, we tidy up together and my colleagues show me the different treatments and how they are performed on the clients. I am allowed to do a manicure on the clients and eventually I will be able to do a pedicure too. With the help of my colleague, I even waxed the fingers of a client. I am very happy with my work placement because I have learnt a lot and it has given me the chance to experience a lot of treatments that I haven’t come across at school.
