After the journey to London, interning in the marketing department of an industrial tech company, Tobias Schüttler is more determined than ever to launch himself into a marketing career. Originally from the small town Wiesloch near Heidelberg in Germany, Tobias found the UK capital both impressive and remarkably different from his home. We asked the 20-year-old apprentice about the experience that helped him find his career path.

How would you describe your time in London?

The three weeks went by so quickly, but my classmates and I still talk about the impressions the city and its beautiful places have made on us. London is much bigger than German cities, for example, Berlin only has 3.5 million inhabitants, whereas London has 8.6 million!

What was your work placement like?

I was very happy with my work placement at Microlease, a company that deals with electronic test equipment. I worked in the marketing department, where I handled consumer data and translated texts for the German marketing campaign.

How has this experience inspired you?

It has helped me find my professional path. Now I know that I want to work in marketing after finishing my apprenticeship in Germany. I’ve also started to read books about online marketing.

What did you learn from the trip?

The best way to learn a language is definitely to speak to people! I spent my free time with my work colleagues and I think it improved my English considerably. From them, I learned a lot of new things about living and working in London.

What did you find most exciting about being in a new country?

Germans are used to quite different living standards to the British. Our priorities are different. But I like the London way, especially how there are so many cultures in one place.

What are your plans for the future?

To finish my apprenticeship, earn more money and see all the beautiful places of the world.
