General Information on Harrow
Harrow is a town in the London Borough of Harrow, northwest London. It is a suburb situated 12.2 miles (16.4 km) west northwest of Charing Cross. It is one of the major metropolitan centres identified in the London Plan and in the mayor of London draft replacement London Plan the central area, to be known as the Harrow and Wealdstone Intensification Area, is identified for growth of at least 1,500 new homes and 2,000 jobs.[1] Harrow is widely known for Harrow School, attended by Winston Churchill and Indian Prime Minister Nehru, however Harrow County School also had a tradition of noted staff and pupils, e.g. Sir Paul Nurse, Sir Nigel Sheinwald, Michael Portillo, Clive Anderson and Geoffrey Perkins. Harrow is home to a large University of Westminster campus near Northwick Park Hospital (although both these landmarks actually lie within the London Borough of Brent). Harrow was a municipal borough of Middlesex before its inclusion in Greater London in 1965.
Take a bus near the College (or take the short 15 minute walk if you are feeling up to it!) and in
a few minutes you will reach Harrow-on-the-Hill, with its famous Harrow School. Harrow Town Centre, with its traditional atmosphere is where you will find a variety of shops including two shopping complexes, a cinema with multiple screens that shows all the latest films, as well as numerous pubs, cafes and restaurants. Also nearby (and easily accessible by public transport) is picturesque Pinner Village, which has retained most of its medieval charm and characteristics including the annual ‘Pinner Fair’.
From Harrow & Wealdstone Station it is very easy to reach Central London. You can choose to travel by British Rail/Overground (direct route to Euston) or take the Bakerloo line (underground). Because Harrow & Wealdstone station has access to British Rail, it is very easy to reach several other towns. Every hour there is the ‘Gatwick Express’, which connects Wealdstone with Gatwick airport, or keep going and it will take you to Brighton. If you travel northwards, it will not be long before you reach Watford with its large Shopping Centre, pubs, theatres and other varied nightlife.
